Sir Paulias Matane has served his country and his people in many ways, as a teacher and administrator, as a writer, as a broadcaster, as Ambassador from PNG to the United States, and as Governor General of PNG. His autobiography, My Childhood in New Guinea (1972), was one of the first autobiographies to be written by a Melanesian; it has been on the curriculum in PNG since the 1970s. Matane also wrote a series of books based on an everyman character, Aimbe. These books, along with a series of travel narratives, written in simple English, were published to encourage others that books could be written by Melanesians and that books were useful.
